portrait of my niece blowing bubbles in omaha, nebraska

A personal photo share: then & now

Today I share the first set of photos I ever took on my brand new “big camera” in 2011. It was one of those random warm fall days. My niece, Jayciona, who then referred to Danny and I as a collective unit “Uncle Danny Jessica,” was so content and focused on her bubbles in the backyard. I didn’t choose her wardrobe or tell her to smile or give her any direction at all… I just observed through my lens. I had always loved and appreciated photography as an art form, but in this moment I fell in love with the process of observing and capturing the authentic human experience and innocence of childhood.

Over the years, I continued shooting family, children, pets, and high school seniors, and found something unique to love about each. In 2021 my experience came full circle with the joy of shooting Jayciona’s senior portraits. My beautiful niece, I’ve always loved her boldness and unique perspective, and she continues to surprise me year after year. She graduates in a few weeks and I’m beyond excited to watch what she does next.
